Obituary for Richard Arthur Tretheway

Richard Arthur Tretheway, 86, a resident of the Portland community, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 3, 2019.

Richard (aka Dick) was born August 19, 1932 in Vallejo, California, the son of the late Wilburt Arthur Tretheway and Dorothy Rose (Wessel) Tretheway. He was a fourth generation Californian, raised in Vallejo and graduated from the Vallejo High School in 1950. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley and his Doctorate in Dental Surgery from the University of California at San Francisco. Dick went on to became an orthodontist in 1957 and practiced for over 40 years in Sunnyvale and in Cupertino, California. Prior to opening his private practice, he served in the Air Force as a general dentist in Japan.

Richard was known as a very kind & an incredibly honest man, as well as a fantastic chef, although he would never admit it! Some of his lifelong passions stemming from early childhood are as follows: he enjoyed making & flying model air planes, as well as flying single engine planes. He was a lifelong avid car enthusiast, restoring cars including a type 57 Bugatti. He enjoyed racing cars particularly auto crossing with his Lotus 7 and racing at Laguna Seca in his 911. He thoroughly enjoyed watching Formula 1 races and analyzing it post-race. He also enjoyed agility dog training. He was a member of the Oregon Miniature Aircraft Squadron (OMAS) flying club and the St. James Lutheran Church.

With his first wife, he had his only child, Stacey (Tretheway) McKee.
Richard married his second wife, Ruth Ann Kaminsky, on June 6, 1987 in Cupertino, California. They lived in Cupertino, retired to Windsor, California before ultimately moving to Portland. They had celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary before Ruth’s passing in 2012.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and by his parents, Wilburt and Dorothy Tretheway. Survivors include his younger sister, Elizabeth (Betty) Porter of San Marcos, California and his extended family including his daughter and her family Stacey & Mike McKee of Denver, Colorado and his stepchildren and their spouses, Kathy & Jamie Olian and Eric & Lauren Skye, both of Portland, Oregon. Also surviving are his 6 grandchildren.

The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions or a meal in his memory to the Portland Homeless Family Shelter at Goose Hallow, which is where Dick had made and delivered meals to for some time on a monthly basis.
