Obituary for Raymond F. Friedman

Dr. Raymond Friedman, 87, member of the Beaverton community, died Friday morning, August 2, 2019, at Hopewell House in Portland.

Ray grew up in Corvallis, graduated from OSU and OHSU and did his radiology residency at UW. He married Barbara Cohen in 1956 and they brought David, Debbie (Montano) and Diana (Stepleton) into the world. He later married Nancy Himes in 1977, who brought two children into his family, Ken and John. He is already missed by all of them along with nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Ray’s love of the trombone started in high school and spanned college and medical school, where the Sigmoid Six band rocked it. Ray couldn’t get enough - he then enjoyed 20 years in the One More Time Around marching band.

He was at Woodland Park Hospital for 18 years, followed by many years at St Helens Hospital and OHSU. He was also active in medical politics and had a love and calling for radiology; he read mammograms until he was 81.

Traveling was a big part of Ray's life and he incorporated it into his career. This included a fellowship in Uppsala, Sweden in 1964; he returned to Sweden as a visiting professor for 50 years, learning angiography (and Swedish) along the way. Ray and Nancy traveled to 71 countries, including a NW Medical Teams trip to Honduras, where he taught a community how to use a donated x-ray machine.

While some doctors like to play golf, he preferred to play store. Ray loved being a shopkeeper, opening 2nds on First in 1981, with his beloved Swedish crystal and oh so many other kitchenware.

He passed on Friday, surrounded by loved ones of which there are many.
Contributions can be made to OHSU Center for Ethics, Hopewell House, or Housecall Providers.

Arrangements pending through Tualatin Valley Funeral Alternatives in Beaverton.
