Obituary for Marguerite "Mony" Mittman

Marguerite F. "Mony" Mittman, 96, a resident of the Hillsboro community, died Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

A Memorial Service in celebration of Mony’s life will take place on Saturday, July 20, 1pm, at First Congregational Church in Hillsboro, Oregon, 494 East Main St.

Mony Mittman was born Marguerite Florence Schmidt to Ferdinand F.C. Schmidt and Florence Schmidt in St. Joseph, Michigan on May 8, 1923. The family moved to Muscatine, Iowa in 1937, where she attended school and met her future husband, Arthur (Art) Mittman. She graduated from high school and during WWII attended and completed Nurses Training at Deaconess Hospital in Chicago.

Mony and Art married on August 17, 1945 after his return from World War II. Over the next 15 years they had 3 children, Nancy, Tom and Elizabeth. During that time they lived in Muscatine, Chicago Hts., and Iowa City where Art in turn taught and studied math and statistics. In the early years of their marriage, Mony worked as a night nurse to help support Art’s studies, and it is thanks to her encouragement that he pursued a PhD. In 1963 they moved to Eugene, Oregon where Art served on the faculty at the University of Oregon until his retirement in 1987. Mony loved meeting graduate students from all over the world whom Art would bring home for dinners and the splendid desserts she for which she was famous. Those friendships and Art’s work, which took her to distant places such as Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Singapore and Sri Lanka, expanded her horizons far beyond her small-town beginnings, and greatly enriched her life. Mony and Art shared a wonderful life together raising their children and loved them, and each other, dearly. They were both very active in the churches they attended, including Congregational Church in Iowa City, Covenant Presbyterian and Central Presbyterian Churches in Eugene and the First Congregational Church UCC of Hillsboro. At various times Mony sang in the choir, served in leadership roles at Central Pres., including fellowship, stewardship, and wedding coordination. In the 1980s and 1990s she also served as secretary for the Eugene Symphony in the 1980s and as bookkeeper for Dr. Silvia Robinson-Weisshaupt. In addition to friends and family she loved music, sports, travel, classic movies, playing bridge and discussing politics.

In 1998 Art and Mony downsized and moved to Orenco Station in Hillsboro, Oregon in order to be closer to their daughter Nancy. They continued to be active members of their community and attended church regularly. After Art’s death in 2003, Mony sustained existing friendships and developed new ones through her book group and music listening group, and she played bridge and cheered for her beloved Trailblazers. She continued to enjoy visiting family across the country whenever possible up to the time of her death on May 22, 2019. Mony had a unique talent in making others always feel welcomed, and she entertained frequent visitors until the end. She loved her friends and neighbors, and they returned that affection.

Mony was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Art, and her sister Ruth Honn. She is survived by her children Nancy (Mick) Nichols, Thomas (Laura Stunz), Elizabeth (Vaughn Anderson); grandchildren Justin and Joseph Phillips, Eric (Jessa), Michael (Meagan) and Scott Mittman, Isaac and Zebiba Anderson; great grandchildren William and Alexa Phillips; Jonah, Eliza and Ruth Mittman; and a host of great friends and extended family.

Mony’s children want to thank all the people who helped make her life so full of happiness and we especially thank friends, neighbors, and caregivers who made it possible for her to spend her final years in the warmth of her own home. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to First Congregational Church of Hillsboro, 494 E Main St, Hillsboro, OR 97123 or charity of your choice in her memory.
