Obituary for Leon A. "Lee" Gatz

Leon A. "Lee" Gatz, 90 a longtime resident of the Rock Creek community, died Monday morning, July 1, 2019 at his home.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tualatin Valley Funeral Alternatives in Hillsboro.

Leon A. “Lee” Gatz, was born May 27, 1929 in Waconia, Minnesota, the son of the late Oscar Gatz and Laura (Stahlke) Gatz. He was raised and received his education in the Waconia community, having been a graduate of the Waconia High School Class of 1947. Lee played on the football team, his school winning the state championship his senior year. Upon his high school graduation, he attended the University of Minnesota, having received a bachelor’s degree in Mortuary Science.

Lee was a Veteran of the Korean conflict, having joined the United States Army. He was a member of the 8204th Army Unit (American Graves Registration Service Group).

Lee was united in marriage to Donna Lee Arnett on July 5, 1957 in the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. They would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last week. Following their marriage, they resided in Waconia, Minnesota, until 1990, when they moved to Oregon, settling in the Rock Creek community, where they have resided since.

He had worked in the funeral industry as a casket salesman for Dubuque Casket Company from 1956-1969 and Batesville Casket Company from 1969 to 1990, when he retired.

While residing in the Waconia community, Lee was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, having served as an elder, served on the local school board, served as a Boy Scout leader, and was a member of the Hunt Club.

Among his special interests, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. He also loved children, and Donna served as foster parents for sixteen children. Lee also enjoyed caring for his service dog, “Bailey.”

Survivors include his wife, Donna Gatz, of the family home in Rock Creek, Oregon; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Stephen Jones of Kingwood, Texas, and Lisa and Thomas Werner, of Portland, Oregon.

Also surviving are his four grandchildren and a spouse, Alana and Zachary Polumbos, of Conroe, Texas; Samuel Jones, of Ft. Collins, Colorado; Lucas Jones, of Kingwood, Texas and Ryan Werner, of Portland Oregon; his two great-grandchildren, Jacob Lucas Armstrong and Madison Caroline Polumbos and his two nephews, Todd Gatz, of Ely, Minnesota and Tim Gatz, of Waconia, Minnesota.

The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions in his name to the Providence St. Vincent Hospital Foundation, or the Salvation Army.

I’m Free

Don’t grieve for me for now I’m free
I’m following that path God laid for me.
I took His hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I found that peace at close of day.

If my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah, yes, these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow;
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savored much –
Good times, good friends, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and you will see
God wanted me now, He set me free.
