Obituary for Clara Mercer

Clara E. Mercer, 100, a resident of the Hillsboro community, died Thursday, May 30, 2019 at her home.

Clara, age 100, went to heaven on May 30, 2019. She was born in Mackeyville, Pennsylvania, to Hildagard (Molly) and Harry R. Strouse. At the age of 15, she traveled alone by train to be with her mother and brother George in Hillsboro, Oregon.

After graduating from Hillhi in 1939, she married Clinton Mercer, whom she had met several year before while picking strawberries. She worked a few years at the canner in Hillsboro, Oregon, while her husband was in the Army and was stationed in Japan during the occupation.

Clara loved to cook and try out new recipes. She planted all sorts of fruit, nut, and flowering trees as well as a grape vineyard, strawberries, and flowers. She raised chickens and rabbits and dearly loved her cats. Many hours were spent salmon fishing with her husband on the Siletz River, Columbia River, and Multnomah Channel. She generally caught more fish than her husband; although Clinton caught the largest salmon weighing 58 pounds.

She enjoyed Christian fellowship with the Four-Square Church, Whosever Will Church, Life Church, and Women’s Aglow. Clara enjoyed her 100th birthday last year with friends and relatives.

Clara is survived by her daughter Pamela Skypala (Hillsboro, Oregon) and many nieces and nephews. No memorial will be held per her request.
